What is Policosanol and how is it structured?
Policosanol is a natural mixture of long-chain fatty alcohols (LCFAs) obtained from sugar cane. Octacosanol is the main component. Octacosanol is found in natural waxes extracted from plants [1] and is also found in wheat germ oils. As only a very small proportion of octacosanol is absorbed through food, octacosanol in the form of policosanol is often used in food supplements[1].
In which foods does policosanol occur naturally?
The germ and bran of various cereals such as wheat, oats, rye, barley, rice and corn are generally rich in policosanols .
Other good sources include seeds and nuts: Hazelnuts, cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds, peanuts and pine nuts.
Unrefined vegetable oils such as wheat germ oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, fruit and leafy vegetables are also counted among the food sources[2].
