What is White Willow Bark?
White Willow is known in German-speaking countries under the name "Silber-Weide" (Salix alba). However, there are around 500 different willow species in total, which are found all over the world, particularly in Central Europe and on the coast. The dried bark of young twigs is primarily used in herbal medicine. [1]
What are the effects of willow bark?
Willow bark is particularly popular due to its ingredients: flavonoids, caffeic acid derivatives and salicylates and in particular the phenol glucoside salicin. Salicin is converted to salicylic acid in the liver. This substance is the precursor of acetylsalicylic acid, which is found today in Aspirin®, for example, and is often abbreviated to ASA. [2]
